Civilization vs. Savagery Essay Counterpoint is a common literary device used by many authors in a variety of forms of literature. It gives the work contrast and interest as well as a diverse insight into two completely different ideas or opposites. The main counterpoint presented in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies would be the idea of civilization vs. savagery. This motif is presented throughout the novel. The idea that humans are constantly battling their feral instincts and civilized ideals is a theme that is deeply and extensively explored. Golding acquaints civilization with good, and savagery with evil. He uses symbolic characters and objects in order to convey his themes and ideas. He represents the opposing forces of civilization and savagery with the two main characters: Ralph, the protagonist, who represents order and leadership; and Jack, the antagonist, who represents savagery and the desire for power. Among these characters there are many others who react to the conflict in different ways. The conflict between these opposites is the driving force of the novel. When it comes down to the idea of civilization, Golding implies that civilization is something forced upon humans by society, and not something one is instinctively drawn to. Civilization is merely just a mask of ones instincts. Ralph is the perfect example of the desire for civilization among the boys of the island. He expresses this quality when he states, â€Å"Weve got to have rules and obey them. After all, were not savages. Were English, and the English are best at everything† (Golding 2.192). The boys still desire their previous, ordered life they left back in England. Ralph is the symbol of supressing one’s natural savage instincts, he feels the thrill and exhilaration of barbarity but manages to subdue these spirits. Piggy is also an example of the human need for civilization. Not once in the novel does he display savage feelings or undertones. This shows just how badly the human race strives for civilization, but it is not something organic. The counterpoint to the idea of civilization in Lord of the Flies would be the theme of savagery. Golding seems to suggest throughout the novel that a humans savage instincts are far more powerful then the desire for civilization. The perfect character to acquaint to the theme of savagery would be Jack. Jack thrives off of dominance and power. He exemplifies these traits during the murder of Simon: The sticks fell and the mouth of the new circle crunched and screamed. The beast was on its knees in the center, its arms folded over its face. It was crying out against the abominable noise something about a body on the hill. The beast struggled forward, broke the ring and fell over the steep edge of the rock to the sand by the water. At once the crowd surged after it, poured down the rock, leapt on to the beast, screamed, struck, bit, tore. There were no words, and no movements but the tearing of teeth and claws. (Golding 9.89-99) The boys revert to their instinctive ferocious roots, having no mercy on their fellow human. They cruelly murder Simon as if he were a wild animal. Roger is also a good example of savagery in the novel. As the idea of civilization on the island begins to become a distant memory, Roger lets himself become victim of his most basic human instincts. This is first apparent to the reader when Roger throws rocks at the littluns, and after his murder of the pig which was much more brutal then necessary. Roger is also the leading culprit in the loss of Piggy. He was the one who pushed the boulder down the hill inevitably causing Piggy’s death. While Jack feeds off the idea of power, Roger revolves around causing pain. He symbolizes the sadistic instincts of mankind, and having to suppress the desire to hurt others in order to function in society. William Golding uses counterpoint to his advantage in the writing of his novel Lord of the Flies. He clearly expresses the conflict between the complex human need for civilization and mankind’s savage instincts. He expresses the struggle extensively using the characters in the novel to portray both sides. Savages vs. those who struggle to keep civility. The novel deeply explores the concept of human instincts overpowering one’s facade of civilization put on for the rest of society. The business should try identifying its key target market, chalk out a meaningful marketing strategy and where it wants to position itself in the market. The Scarlet Letter - The Letter of a Thousand Words    The Scarlet Letter deals with the theme of sin. Throughout history, people have committed all types of sins, and whether they are major or minor, people have been punished. However the severity of a punishment is very difficult to agree on. Some people feel that sinners should be deeply punished no matter how little the wrongdoing was. Others feel that a person's punishment should be based upon the severity of their crime. What many people overlook is the fact that in time, we all have committed sins. That is the case with the three main characters from the Scarlet Letter. Even though they were all different on the outside, inside they all shared a certain feeling of sin and guilt. So when I think of Hester, Dimmesdale, and Chillingworth, I think heavily upon the feelings that they all shared together, which were sin and guilt.    This novel was brought about from one mistake that a young, beautiful woman made. Here she was sent over to Boston without her husband, and many years later still hasn't shown up. She doesn't know if he is alive or died at sea. In the meantime, she got acquainted with Reverend Dimmesdale. Between the two of them, Hester bears a child and that child is the living proof, and a constant reminder that Hester has committed a sin. So the townspeople made Hester wear the letter A on her chest and made her stand on a scaffold in front of the town to display her shame. So everywhere she went she had to carry that guilt with her. In the meantime Chillingworth shows up and demands to know whom the father of Pearl is. Hester will not tell him so he constantly batters her but Hester keeps her strength and refuses each time. Which isn't so easy because she has to face him everyday.    Dimmesdale is most likely the worst sinner of all. His sin was that he was Hester's partner, which was Pearls father. Since he was a coward, he didn't have the guts to admit it to the public. He didn't want to lose the public's trust and his popularity that he had from his congregation.

Mordechai Richler’s book “Son of a smaller hero” Essay

If I were to base my opinion of Jewish people solely on Mordechai Richler’s â€Å"Son of a Smaller Hero†, I would probably start wearing a Swastika on my arm and pledging my allegiance to the fuehrer. Richler characterizes Jews as a people who have an enormous lust for money, women, and power. Richler delivers a piece that seems the complete antithesis of his origional novel. While he crammed his former novel with soft-spoken words, which displayed his passion to inform on useful subjects, â€Å"Hero† blows its readers away by its directness and disregard of political correctness. It tells the story of Noah Adler, a young Jewish man who feels trapped by his ghetto upbringing. He comes from a family controlled by his grandfather Melech Adler. Melech’s observance of the Jewish law turns Noah off of Judaism. He leaves the family and their business, to drive a cab and attend university. Noah’s departure from his family includes one from his religion as well. Once on his own, he is faced with a life unknown to him, and his morals and ethical standards are continually challenged. As he resolves his on going battles with his grandfather, he begins to realize that there is much more to Judaism then he originally though. Apart from Noah’s growing relationship with his grandfather, we see little character development among the novel’s main characters. We are subject to the same comments about the same characters, chapter after chapter. These monotonous descriptions of the characters, while emphasizing characters flaws excellently, become extremely humdrum halfway through the novel. Although Mordechai Richler did not write this as an autobiography, the book does include numerous elements of his life. He endured the hardships of St. Urban Street and the Montreal ghetto as well. This book, while the first in Richler’s series of â€Å"ghetto books†, is the most inclusive about all aspects of life there, from cheap pool room owners, to permanent signs in Jewish stores that read, â€Å"Half-Price sale†, or â€Å"going out of business, every item must go†. Noah’s relationship with his family also reflects that of Richler’s. His grandfather was a Hassid from Europe who could not accept the  new traditions of Canadian Jews, and thus ruled his family with an iron fist to keep them from veering off the path of Jewish morality. Not everything in the book works perfectly. Noah’s delinquent uncle Shloime, who joins the army does not follow with the description we were first presented with of him. The end of the book is oddly sentimental for a novel that has been occupied with ironical disorder. â€Å"Son of A Smaller Hero† is a unique accomplishment for a writer that thought to be perverse in thought. It’s humor and sadness are intertwined just enough to make this novel a one of a kind. I believe that no other can match Richler’s unique style of writing. â€Å"Son Of A Smaller Hero†, is an example of Canadian literature at it’s best. It is the kind of work that makes a nation proud to describe themselves as Canadians.

Those concepts are voluntarism and market failure. I didn't quite understand what he meant by that. He then explained to me that Voluntarism is basically applied ethics, and action for the benefit for the public. Market failure basically explains the existence of non-profits. Non-profit organizations are everywhere in Rhode Island. Wherever there are people, there are non-profits organizations. Non-profit or Not-for-profit organizations exist to preform or provide services for the people within the communities. Whether provided by a public organization or agency, or private organization or agency, they serve a purpose for the people. The Government, educational institutions, community organizations, and health care facilities are all examples of non-profit organizations. Some of these examples work within small neighborhoods with only a few employees and others work state-wide. A nonprofit is an organization that does not seek to turn invested money into more money distribution to its owners. The donors have goals that they seek to acco mplish through the organization, but those goals do not include profiting directly from the organizations activities. Governments often encourage donations to nonprofits by making those donations tax-exempt. Nonprofits do not necessarily aim to lose money; some try to break even or even accumulate money through sale of products and investment of funds. Nonprofits receive treatment by being exempted from income taxes. In the United States, donors can in some cases write off their donations to nonprofits as a deduction on their income tax returns. This encourages the use of the nonprofit form of organization. Since a not-for-profit organization is formed to accomplish a specific task, the profits raised by the organization must be given back into the organization so it is able to make sure their mission is completed successfully. This means all the money earned by the not-for-profit organization will be in the organization. However, money raised by the nonprofit organizations can be used to pay employees, and to complete other missions they may have. In the case for a for-profit organization, the money earned for the company may be given to the owners of the company. A nonprofit organization may qualify for state and federal tax. The decision is made by the IRS as to whether an organization can be a 501c3. Designation as a 501c3 may give a nonprofit organization the chance from paying sales and property taxes on real estate owned by the nonprofit organization. A for-profit organization will not be granted a federal or state tax exemption. Furthermore, for-profit organizations are required to pay taxes on property owned by the company. The main source of money for non-profit organizations is charitable donations. This is also helped by grants, contracts for service and sale of goods. Non-profit organizations are often evaluated on the relationship between contributions and expenses. Tis relationship will show the potential contributors the amount of money that will be used to meet the mission of the organization. Unlike for-profits, nonprofits money flows as the result of operations that are put back into the organization to further the group's mission. Nonprofit organizations are vital to all communities. They provide much required services to those in need from the humanitarian, religious, healthcare, social service, educational, or environmental sector. While striving for success, nonprofit organizations are faced with many obstacles. These problems are hiring of qualified staff, unrealistic expectations, and bad facilities, to lack of people volunteering. Unrealistic goals can have a negative impact on the success of a nonprofit organization and also the relationship of the team involved; the funders and grantees. Nonprofit organizations are very impactful on the communities. Nonprofits are a quality of life because of the valuable programs they provide for the local citizens, but also because of the positive economic impact within our local communities . Nonprofit organizations play a vital role in society by focusing resources and providing services to community needs without regard to profit. However, violence on the screen has never been the central preoccupation of any of these directors; instead, such scenes are merely a culmination of psychological or mysterious experiences of characters. Both directors relied on the skillful use of humor in their films. While Argento put an emphasis on humor in some of its films, e.g. ‘The Bird with the Crystal Plumage’, Hitchcock’s works almost always contain a good deal of what is called ‘gallows humor’. However, there are some differences in the directing style of Argento and Hitchcock. In certain films, Argento focused more on the means of artistic expression than the actual message of the film. For instance, in ‘Suspiria’ and ‘Inferno’ Argento resorts to purely surrealistic approaches and techniques. Hitchcock, in his turn, devoted greater attention to psychological subtleties and attempted to convey the innermost feeling and emotions of characters. Yet Argento also engaged in the investigation of psychological matters in some of his films, most notably ‘Deep Red’. Some critics notice Freudian influence in Argento’s early movies (Nashawaty, 2007), while Hitchcock based many of his works on psychoanalytical theories, mostly of Jacques Lacan. Yet Freudian themes are present in Hitchcock’s ‘Spellbound’ and in those films that feature an oppressive and restrictive mother figure.
